Stars are born with discs that during their initial stages of formation are relatively massive, asymmetric and they are being fed with material from their parent clouds. I will discuss under what conditions such discs can become gravitationally unstable and fragment, focusing on the effect of radiative feedback from newly formed objects. Finally, I will argue that disc fragmentation plays an important role in the formation of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.
