I will discuss the links between star formation and chemistry of Galactic discs, and how we have to change some of the paradigms in understanding Galactic chemical evolution. I will first show how inside-out formation can produce signatures of inverse (positive radial) metallicity/abundance gradients in galactic stellar populations, and how this can remove some problems in extragalactic and galactic observations. This is also connected to other features recently observed in the [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] planes. I will also show how we can use discoveries of special regions of unusual star formation, in particular the component of the nuclear disc, to challenge assumptions in chemical evolution models.
