Non-Cosmology Science with the Euclid Observatory
Euclid: A Galactic Spectroscopy Machine
Date Submitted
Niall Deacon
University of Hertfordshire
Euclid is primarily a cosmology mission consisting of optical imaging, near-infrared imaging and near-infrared spectroscopy surveys. This last component will provide R~600 spectra in the J and H band for every object brighter than H_AB=19 over 15,000 sq. deg. I will outline Euclid’s potential for stars, substellar objects and rare Galactic objects. Euclid’s spectral range from 1.25 to 1.85 microns covers molecular and atomic features important for the discovery and characterization of brown dwarfs and carbon stars and for the measurement of stellar parameters. This talk will also provide the opportunity for the UK Galactic community to tell Euclid consortium members what data products and calibrations they need for legacy science.
