Stellar chemistry holds fundamental clues to the history of star formation and mass assembly of stellar systems. Massive surveys of stellar populations in the Galaxy are revolutionising our view of the history of the Milky Way while also placing constraints on galaxy formation models in general. By focusing on the APOGEE survey, I will highlight a few results that offer important insights on the nature of the Galactic bulge, the history of the Galactic halo, and the structure and history of the Galactic disk.
