In the Original Research By Young Twinkle Students (ORBYTS) program, sixth form students perform original publication-quality research under the supervision of trained PhD students and other young scientists. The research is on science relating to the Twinkle Space Mission that will characterise exoplanetary atmospheres.
In an ORBYTS project, meetings between students and supervisors occur approximately every two weeks for the duration of the project (usually a full school year): depending on the progress of the research, tasks are adapted to best suit the abilities of the group. All ORBYTS projects have as an ultimate aim to produce publishable research; students who have contributed sufficiently then become official named authors.
Our first ORBYTS paper with three student co-authors has recently been published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplementary Series. The ORBYTS program has been expanding and now incorporates 45 current students from eight schools in London and Bristol, 20 past students and 30 future summer school students from across the UK. We are looking to expand even further in the 2017/18 school year and would invite further collaboration in this project in the form of research hubs across the UK.
