For visitors to Greenwich, the Royal Observatory - with its historic telescopes, planetarium and galleries of historic and contemporary space science - is the obvious astronomical destination. But in fact Greenwich contains another site of astronomical significance in the form of the Queen’s House, a remnant of the old Greenwich Palace which, from 1675-76 served as a makeshift observatory for the first Astronomer Royal while the Royal Observatory itself was under construction. Now a major art gallery, the Queen’s House underwent a complete renovation and re-hang in 2016 and has reopened with the addition of two rooms of astronomically-themed art. This talk will describe the collaboration between art curators and astronomers that led to this innovation – a partnership that we are continuing to develop in Greenwich and beyond.
