Low-Surface-Brightness Astronomy: The New Era of Deep-Wide Galaxy Surveys

We present some recent results in various galaxy fields reported historically to have faint emission. The cluster A1413 has been noted by Oemler (1976) and Schombert (1988) to have the largest cD envelope, extending up to 2 Mpc in radius. We have observed several CCD fields along the major axis and find no evidence of surface brightness gradients across each field, but co-adding all the fields does produce tantalising evidence of a gradient representing the envelope. A1795 has a strange envelope structure reported by Johnstone et al. (1991). Deep CCD observations of this field confirm the existence of this distorted structure. In the area between Stephan's Quintet and NGC 7331 Arp & Lorre (1976) have found various filamentary and diffuse emission structures and we plan to take deep CCD exposures of several fields to see if this emission is real.
