One way to access the Gaia archive is via the Table Access Protocol (TAP) from an external client. We present a brief outline of the "gaia-on-tap" package that works with Astropy to provide TAP access to the ESA Gaia archive database. This allows Python code to submit SQL-like queries to the archive at ESA and retrieve the results as table objects for interactive or programmatic use.
