I will present the dataset and analysis of the nearby He-poor supernova 2016coi. The Liverpool Telecope, LCO, and YNAO observations extend, uninterrupted, from 2 days after explosion until the nebular phase giving the most comprehensive set of observations of a He-poor stripped envelope SN to date. The SN is found to be moderately more massive than other SNe Ic with some curious features in the very early spectra. Then, having used SN 2016coi to establish the level of observations required, I will briefly discuss how developing new telescopes and instrumentation can aid supernova and transient science in the era of Gaia and LSST. I will also stress the importance of sub-2 m telescopes in this era and highlight the danger to transient astronomy in the loss of such facilities.
